The daughter won’t stop talking about her mother. The swelling voice, the hallucinatory echoes, coming as if from a ghost that does not reveal itself. Kei Shichiri’s auditory feast is amplified and expanded by the performance of the “Acousmonium,” a stereo sound system that makes use of over 20 speakers. It is a revised and extended version of a piece that was performed in Tokyo’s Ryogoku area and France’s Futura festival in 2015, and in Kyoto in 2016. (World premiere)

  • Sound / Acousmonium: Tomonari Higaki
  • Composition / Direction: Kei Shichiri

Music as Film (the first installment of Kei Shichiri’s Films Made of Sound series) was first performed in 2014. The work returns in a radically updated international version, complete with native English-speaking performers. Using both subtitles and voices, it conjures up the strange connection between cinema, which was born in Paris at the end of the 19th century, and a version of the play Salome that was never staged. (World premiere)

  • Performer: Junko Sato / Cal Lyall / James Hadfield / Miya / William Koutaro Tokuhisa / sei / Ikuhiro Yamagata/Teppei Kondo etc

Kei Shichiri

“Cinema from Sound” is film director Kei Shichiri’s project, a series of works that journey back and forth between live performance and film production. In a reversal of the usual process of film production, Shichiri has taken sound (i.e. a soundtrack) and created a film based on it, thus unpacking elements of other genres that a film integrates. Collaborating with diverse creators in this process, Shichiri attempts to expand the horizons of film as a medium of expression. This time, his latest effort in this quest will be shown along with two others, one film a day over a three-day period.
