TPAM registrants can propose a theme and host an informal meeting with other participants of TPAM. Diverse themes ranging from the promotion of one’s own productions and projects to discussion on issues around performing arts have been proposed. An additional registration fee is required to host a meeting. Participation in the meetings as a guest is free of charge and doesn’t require reservation.
- “Table” is for a small, intimate meeting and discussion with up to 12 hosts and guests.
- “Room” is with video equipment and a Japanese – English interpreter. For presentation to up to 30 people.

DARK MASTER of Niwa Gekidan Penino, which will have been presented in TPAM Fringe, was created three years ago together with local people in Tennoji, Osaka, in response to the proposal “Let’s do something together” from Oval Theater in the city. Why, and how, was the Tennoji version of the piece that was originally presented in 2003 and 2006 created? The internationally-renowned director Kuro Tanino tells the story of the process and also talks about his idea of “community” work.

Centre 42 is a non-profit arts organisation in Singapore. Florian Malzacher (artistic director of Impulse Theater Festival) introduces the festival that has presented the most important independent theatre productions in Austria, Germany and Switzerland for the last 25 years. It is considered to be the most significant platform for independent theatre in this area, showing works that are not only produced outside the communal theatre system but also push experimental, interdisciplinary approaches. Artists like Rimini Protokoll or René Pollesch were here first introduced to a wider audience. In recent years the festival has focussed on contemporary forms of political theatre as well as the relation between art and politics – a topic Florian Malzacher has widely published on.

With the introduction of movies and music videos in the 1980s, rap and street dance began finding their way into Asia. In recent years, as street dance became popular among teenagers, dance companies, studios, and societies in universities and colleges have also been created. At the same time, more and more collaborations between street dance and contemporary dance are rising. “Choja Studio” in the vicinity of BankART Studio NYK is a rental space that anyone can use as a place for practicing and presenting music, dance, theater, etc. as well as domestic and overseas artists’ accommodation and staying places. Contemporary dance is a main stream performing art form in the world. Although many leading Chinese contemporary dance organizations and artists are very active internationally, the contemporary dance market of China is still in the emerging stage. The mission of our festival is to promote contemporary collaboration and integration with the world. The 1st Shanghai Dance Festival was successfully held in late July, 2016 in Shanghai. In 2018, we will present 2nd Shanghai Dance Festival. We’d love to share our past experience, draw valuable suggestions and build network with international expert practitioners.

Indigenous and digital performing arts are two vibrant kinds developing in Taiwan for industrial historical backgrounds. Be it projecting via digital media the subtle transformation between the virtual and reality of modern society, or contemplating through tribe culture on one’s returning to innocence. These two creative pathways that seem to be sitting on two side of the spectrum, are coincidentally reflecting the openness, innovation and diversity of the Arts scene in Taiwan. In this session there are artists, producers and arts managers, sharing their arts concepts, production practice, the supporting system in Taiwan concerning these two kinds of performing arts, and opportunities for international connections and collaborations.

Since our participation in TPAM2014, HANCHU-YUEI has visited six countries in three years, working on ten international co-productions and overseas performances. I would like to share my experience as the producer in these countries, because in the unexpected and sudden change of the environment I strongly feel that our creations overseas have been in continuation of what we had done in Japan. Young companies might feel that international touring is like a dream, but I hope they will realize that it is more feasible than they think and just do it like we did.

Kinosaki International Arts Center (KIAC) is an artist-in-residence facility specifically for performing arts located in a hot-spring town in Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture. Okinawa Art Culture Theater will establish an 80-seat privately-run venue “Blackboard Theatre” in Naha, Okinawa, in July 2017. We have been accumulating know-hows and researching aiming to make the theatre an artistic and cultural base that local people feel familiar with and other regions see as an intersection of Okinawa and them. At this table we would like to talk about what we have done and discuss future possibilities and issues. We look forward to think together and collaborate with you.

A building with a unique historical background, of which second floor was a bowling alley and basement a public bath, will be renovated into an art center with a hall, event space, studio, gallery and cafe. Buoy will try to offer good programs throughout the year by having diverse dramaturges whose expertise differ work collectively. It also aims to become a place where people can encounter “otherness” through performances and exhibitions by young artists as well as monthly collaborative events by artists from different backgrounds including contemporary art, theatre, dance, contemporary music, sculpture and poetry.

Kyoto Experiment, launched in 2010, is Kyoto’s first international performing arts festival. A meeting for introducing a new work that I have been working on since 2015 and is planned to be presented at the ‘Karnabal’ festival in the Philippines next spring. Tako-yaki, a Japanese snack filled with diced octopus, is the motif of this piece. While it is popular also in the Philippines, octopus symbolizes the invasion by the Japanese army there. A number of Japanese military ships that sank are still under their seas. This interactive theatre try to eat “war” together with each audience member, using tako-yaki as the medium.
