TPAM starts a music program this year, in consideration of the importance of music, in addition to theatre and dance, in its Asia focus since 2015. Aki Onda, the director of the music program, reports on his research in Indonesian cities, Hanoi and Taipei and talks about what in Asian music interests him.

Aki Onda (Sound Artist / Curator)
Born in Japan and currently resides in New York. He is particularly known for his Cassette Memories project — works compiled from a “sound diary” of field-recordings collected by Onda over a span of two decades. As a curator, he has continuously curated tours and exhibitions of such artists as Gozo Yoshimasu, Akio Suzuki, Yoshihide Otomo, Kanta Horio and Fuyuki Yamakawa in North America, including Time-Based Art Festival in Portland and The Kitchen in New York.

Tomoyuki Arai (Director, Sound Live Tokyo)
Born in Yokohama in 1974. BA in literature at Waseda University, and MA in theatre and film arts at its Graduate School of Letters, Arts and Sciences. Works with Japan Center, Pacific Basin Arts Communication. Previous work experience includes archival work in the library of the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum, technical work with Gekidan Kaitaisha, and videomaking for movements for the abolition of nuclear weapons and development of contingent workers’ labor union. Involved in the programming of Sound Live Tokyo since 2012.
