Pappa TARAHUMARA
three sisters
© Kevin
Contemporary dance-theatre company, Pappa TARAHUMARA, adapts Anton Chekov's literary classic to the context of the Japanese countryside in the 1960s. Its seemingly sweet portrayal of three bored sisters grappling with womanhood spirals in to a sensual and charged meditation on female identity, coming of age and the Japanese obsession with youth culture. This eccentric comic tragedy, narrated through dynamic choreography, is a powerfully condensed alternative to the company's larger-scale multi-disciplinary works.

Red flower, White flower

“Flower’s memory” is the key word of this dance piece, where women of our times are traveling between memory and oblivion. There is the white flower, which was buried under glass in the ground during a childhood game. There is the red canna, which bloomed like being ablaze in a summer’s sunshine. The dance story swifts through time, awaiting the season of flowers each year in the daily life of people, where nothing is sure or promised.

In the near future a midget room, an "attic," could be used by humans all over the world for "social withdrawal." The events at "the attic" could happen anywhere unrelated to each other except that humans react in the same way in similar situations and the play exposes this hidden reality. The "Super Drama" delivered from the world's tiniest stage and which toured in its original edition for seven years in Japan and abroad is a project set up as an overpowering "case" to regenerate theater. Following a U.S. version, an Australian, Korean, and French version also will be made this year.

A novel "L'Arret de mort" written by Maurice Blanchot tells a story about the woman who came back to life again for called by a man, and made an exchange with the man, and finally died again. However, after I finished reading it, I felt both awful desolation, and ununderstandable quiet relief that transcend finiteness of human beings. Because of this strangeness I made this quite difficult challenge of making play from this novel. - the president OKAMURA Yojiro who studied under famous Noh actor KANZE Hideo for 8 years.
